Turnover Rates on Complex Heterogeneous Catalysis
AIChE J. 64 (2018) 3778-3785
Since the beginning of the new millennium, there has been very rapid growth in the synthesis and characterization of new and complex nanomaterials, stimulated in part by the launch of the US National Nanotechnology Initiative in 2000. Nanostructured solid catalysts used in the large-scale production of fuels and chemicals are one of the most successful implementations of nanotechnology related to chemistry, although many of the major advancements in the field occurred before the emphasis on nanoscale structures was popularized. Discovery of new materials and manipulation of existing materials with atomic precision have become more common recently, with catalysis often claimed as a beneficiary of the research. Although catalysis in the presence of these materials is usually demonstrated by observing the chemical transformation of reactants into products, the nature of the active site and therefore a quantitative evaluation of a site-specific reaction rate remains elusive because of the complexity of the material. In this Perspective, the evaluation of reaction rates on complex materials is discussed in light of recent progress in the use of transient kinetic methods.
