DSI is not just an ITS effort...success depends on us all.

What is it about: Identifying items we have connected to the network, where it is, and making/keeping it secure. DSI is a risk-based, transformative approach that integrates the partnerships, processes, and technologies needed to urgently address our known vulnerabilities and to create a resilient and secure network environment.

What caused the need: Cybersecurity Incident- In 2023, our University experienced the collective impact of a cybersecurity incident in which one device was breached and became an entry point to a secondary device in another area. 60,000 members of our community rushed to reset their passwords.

What role do we play: Identify all devices that are connected to the University network and allow Engr-IT to review and manage them. Not sure what devices are associated with your area, Contact ENGR-IT@virginia.edu . It is a misconception that your information is safe if devices in your school, department, or unit meet security standards locally. We are all connected by a shared network and share access to sensitive information. And recent assessments show that the vulnerabilities that led to our 2023 incident still exist today—we cannot continue with business as usual.
