John Hanckel is a human factors engineer at a major medical device company. He graduated with both a bachelor of science and a master of engineering in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia. Here's what he says about how his educational experiences helped to shape his career:"One of the most fascinating problems facing the medical field is patient compliance; if a medical device is too cumbersome or uncomfortable to use, a patient will opt to not use it even at the risk of their health. As I studied further into this problem, I learned that identifying and solving this issue is a key task for the Human Factors field. After graduation, I reached out to a leading medical equipment company to join their Usability and Human Factors team, where we validate life-saving devices to be as usable and easy-to-use as possible."
