UVA MSE congratulates John R. Scully, Charles Henderson Chaired Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and department chair, elected member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine.Scully is recognized for advancing corrosion science and the durability of materials needed for a wide range of applications including energy, transportation, critical infrastructure, aerospace, communications, defense and public health. As a researcher, teacher and co-director of the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering, Scully seeks to inform public understanding of the antiviral properties of copper and its compounds, help communities prevent lead poisoning disasters, support nuclear energy innovation to realize a net-zero carbon future, and understand the behavior of high-entropy alloys, with their exceptional combination of strength, ductility and damage tolerance. Scully has served as research advisor to a significant number of UVA Engineering graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, creating a national brain trust and cadre of future leaders dedicated to solving corrosion problems, including numerous professors at educational institutions in four countries. Throughout his career, Scully has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with his students and research partners. Adding in the hundreds more publications in conference proceedings and government reports, Scully has achieved 19,250 Google Scholar citations and an H-index of 71.
