Some graduate students earn a Ph.D. in BME from the School of Engineering and an M.D. from the School of Medicine. This is the groundwork for pioneering advances in clinical practice through research.
For students in UVA's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), Ph.D. training begins after two years of medical school. Students pursue a modified schedule of required BME coursework and complete a single Elective Educational Experience (EEE). The Ph.D. training period normally lasts 3.5 - 4 years. After the dissertation defense, medical school resumes. MSTP students are supported with full tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend throughout their entire training period.
