J-Term and Summer International Programs
January and summer terms are a great way for students to gain experience abroad, especially if course requirements make it difficult to study abroad in a particular semester. Below are a few programs popular among engineering students, some of which are led by engineering faculty. There are many more opportunities that you can filter through using the ISO Programs Search.
January Term
UVA in Argentina: International Consulting
Students will practice problem-solving in an international consulting context. Working in a team, students will propose solutions to real-world challenges experienced by wineries in Argentina, where wine-making is a global business fueled by exports. Students of all years are welcome to apply and will earn 3 credits for the program: COMM 4293 GCI: IT Project Practicum in Argentina (3 credits) or SYS 2054/3054 System Case Studies (3 credits).

Summer Term
UVA in Germany: Global Technology Practice
This faculty-led program highlights the development and use of technology in Germany and how culture shapes technology practice. The program takes place in Stuttgart, one of the leading centers for manufacturing and innovation. Students of all years are welcome to apply and will earn 6 credits for the program: ENGR 4595 Global Technology Practice: Germany (3 credits) and GETR 3559 Stuttgart in the Midst of Germany and Europe (3 credits).

UVA in Greece: Creative Interaction Design
This faculty-led program is focused on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), so there is a prerequisite of CS3205 HCI in Software Development. Students will have an immersive hands-on experience in Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and take on the unique challenge of designing interactive technologies for public spaces outside the US. Rising second, third, and fourth year students are encouraged to apply and will receive credit for Creative Interaction Design (3 credits).

UVA in Lithuania: Sustainable Urban Design Challenges
This faculty-led program gives students the opportunity to work on projects for city-related waste governance and recycling, green public spaces, smart interventions in mobility, and renewable energy. Students will spend three weeks in Lithuania at the Vilnius Technical University (VT) campus and hear from city officials, VT faculty, and business representatives. Rising second, third, and fourth year students are encouraged to apply and will receive credit for GSVS 2559 Sustainable Urban Design Challenges or STS 2500 Sustainable Engineering Design Challenges (3 credits).

UVA in Sweden: Global Sustainability Consulting
This is a faculty-led program where students will be working for a Swedish client on a sustainability-related project in Lund, one of the oldest cities in Sweden. The program is focused on the intersection of systems engineering, business, and environmental management. All undergraduate students are encouraged to apply, and students will receive credit for SYS 2054 or SYS 3054 Systems Case Studies (3 credits).

UVA Engineering in South Korea: Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology
This program is an opportunity for rising third and fourth year engineering students to participate in undergraduate summer research while exploring Daegu, the third-largest city in South Korea. Students will be paired with a research lab based on their interests and conduct research for 6-8 weeks. Participants will receive academic credit for ENGR 4595 Special Topics in Engineering (3 credits).
