Engineering School Education Abroad Policies
The School of Engineering and Applied Science encourages all students to study abroad. Students participate in study abroad according to the guidelines below; students interested in study abroad should consult the information available in the International Studies Office in Minor Hall, which handles all applications for study abroad. Further information and policies are posted on its website under Education Abroad: https://educationabroad.virginia.edu/. Students should confer with their major advisor early in the process of selecting a Study Abroad program and review the Undergraduate Record section on Student International Travel.
Eligibility
Students must be in good academic standing (i.e., not on Academic Warning or suspended) during or at the end of the term before studying abroad. If suspension is imposed before departure, any previous permission is void. Students must have a Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 during or at the end of the term before studying abroad. Students who wish to request an exception to the GPA standard can appeal to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in Engineering.
Enrollment
Students must enroll in at least 12 U.S. credits transferring back to UVA per semester for semester/year study abroad. There is no enrollment credit minimum during summer, but students must enroll in at least 6 credits to be eligible to receive financial aid.
Transfer Credit
See university policy for transfer credit policies (Credit From Foreign Institutions section). Students must get approval from their faculty study abroad advisor in their major department and the Assistant Dean for Career Development in Engineering. Additional approvals might be needed for minors or second majors outside of Engineering.
Please contact Dr. Julia Lapan, Assistant Dean in the School of Engineering, at engineeringabroad@virginia.edu with any questions related to research, study, or internships abroad.
