Research @ UVA Engineering
Engineering for a Sustainable FutureEngineering a better future will require the best work of researchers collaborating along the spectrum from the tiniest building blocks of materials through the complex workings of entire societal systems. We work at the micro- and nano-scale in fields like heat transfer, catalysis and 2-D materials to identify fundamental properties of matter. Our goal is not simply to conduct research, but to pursue research with positive global impact.
Sara Lu Riggs
Gabriel Robins
Professor Gabriel Robins earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA in 1992, where he received an IBM Fellowship and a Distinguished Teaching Award.
Ethan A. Scott
Ethan joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2023. In addition to teaching, he serves as Deputy Director of the UVA ExSiTE Lab. Ethan's research interests include the development and application of experimental techniques to analyze heat and energy transfer in extremes of material size and environment.
John R. Scully
Scully's primary research interest is to understand the relationships between a material's structure and composition and properties related to environmental degradation. His historical current focus is on advanced aluminum, magnesium, titanium, ferrous and nickel-based alloys, as well as stainless steels and aluminum-based intermetallic compounds.
Bryn Elizabeth Seabrook
Bryn Seabrook's research interests include, bioethics, public participation in environmental policymaking, energy efficiency, climate change, negotiating the environmental - consumer nexus, and analyzing American consumer culture.
Majid Shafiee-Jood
Majid Shafiee-Jood is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Systems and Information Engineering at the University of Virginia.
Cong Shen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UVa. He obtained his PhD degree from UCLA. His research interests are in wireless communications, networking, in-context learning, reinforcement learning, and federated learning.
Nikhil Shukla
Nikhil Shukla is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia with a joint appointment in the ECE and the Materials Science and Engineering department.
Nikolaos Sidiropoulos
Nikos Sidiropoulos earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland–College Park, in 1992.
Kevin Skadron
Kevin Skadron's research interests cover a wide range of Computer Architecture topics, including hardware acceleration, memory architecture and processing in and near memory (PIM/PNM), automata and pattern-matching/regular-expression acceleration, and hardware support for debugging.
Brian L. Smith, PE
Brian L. Smith, PE is a leader in advanced technology in surface transportation systems - specifically "connecting" the infrastructure to travelers to improve transportation safety and efficiency. His research has contributed to innovations such as mobile phone navigation systems and urban freeway management.
James A. Smith
James A. Smith is an environmental engineer holding the Henry L. Kinnier Chair of Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UVA. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1983 and 1984, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Princeton University in 1992.
UVA Engineering is a vibrant, collegial environment in which to work and teach.
