Minor in Systems Engineering
The Systems Engineering minor prepares students to model and solve impactful, real-world problems using systems thinking principles. With flexible course options tailored to individual interests, the minor complements nearly any area of study.
It should be noted that many SYS courses required for students majoring in systems are restricted to majors only. If you encounter this issue, feel free to reach out to an individual instructor who may well be able to enroll you in the course. Students who wish to pursue a minor in systems should complete the necessary courses and then fill out a Minor Declaration Form.
Minor Requirements
The minor in Systems Engineering consists of 15 credits.
Required Courses
- SYS 2001: Case Studies in Systems Engineering Concepts (3 credits)
- Probability and Statistics (see accordion below) (3 credits)
Systems Core Courses
A student might choose to focus their Systems Core and Elective Courses on a particular area of interest, although it is not required. The choice gives students the flexibility to tailor the Systems minor to their interests or to pursue breadth over multiple areas.
Two SYS courses from the following list (6 credits):
General
- SYS 3021: Deterministic Decision Models
- SYS 3034: System Evaluation
- SYS 3060: Stochastic Decision Models
- SYS 3062: Discrete Event Simulation
Artificial Intelligence, Computing, & Data Science
- SYS 2201: Computational Methods for AI Systems
- SYS 2202: Data and Information Engineering
- SYS 4021: Linear Statistical Models
Human-Centered Design
- SYS 3023: Human Machine Interface
Systems Elective Courses
Any SYS elective or core course not previously taken (3 credits):
- Examples of Systems electives and their associated topic areas can be found here.
- SYS 4995: Supervised Project Research is included as an acceptable elective course.
Probability and Statistics Requirement
For SEAS undergraduate students, the following courses fulfill the probability and statistics requirement:
- APMA 3100: Probability
- APMA 3110: Applied Statistics and Probability
- APMA 3120: Statistics
For non-SEAS undergraduate students, a SYS elective course can fulfill the probability and statistics requirement if the student has completed coursework in probability and/or statistics:
- For example, if the student has taken STAT 3110/3120, MATH 3100, etc., they can enroll in a SYS elective course instead of taking one of the APMA 3100/3110/3120 courses.
- Per the College of Arts & Sciences policies, students cannot double-count courses from the Systems Engineering minor towards their major requirements.
