Experiences Abroad

Studying abroad ranks among the most profoundly transformative experiences available to an undergraduate student. The Office of Engineering International Program's goal is to enable every UVA Engineering undergraduate student to obtain a significant international experience. Our office offers information, advising, and logistical support to engineering students interested in study, work, or service-learning abroad.

More About Us

As an engineering student, going abroad is a great opportunity to explore new cultures while learning at partner institutions from around the world. To find out a little more about the study abroad process, check out the Getting Started page.

With many study abroad programs to choose from, the Engineers Abroad Search Tool can be helpful to filter through the different institutions that UVA engineering undergraduates have studied at in the past. You can also find courses students have taken organized by major and country on the Academics page. The Programs page is where you'll find study abroad options for different terms, including fall and spring, summer, and January terms, as well as internship opportunities. There are many faculty-led abroad programs to choose from, particularly in the summer and during the January term!

Figuring out how to fit study abroad into your schedule can be tough. To make things easier, our office has selected programs from universities around the world that we believe would be a great fit. These "pathways" programs offer predefined semester abroad plans best tailored to specific majors. Follow the links to explore what courses our office has selected:

Student International Travel Update (12/20/2021 - 4:00pm)
"Student international travel for university-related purposes remains restricted. However, thanks to health and safety measures implemented by travel and program providers and individual nations, expanded access to COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, and careful student planning, the University is allowing a number of students to travel abroad for university-related purposes. All student international travel, including travel by graduate students and GME residents and fellows, is subject to the University Policy on Student International Travel and will continue through spring 2022 to require a favorable review of local health, safety, and security conditions and individual student plans. See the COVID Considerations page for more information.

The University is monitoring emerging information on Omicron, the recently identified variant of the COVID-19 virus, as well as possible restrictions on travel. Travelers should confirm entry requirements for their destination before their departure date and make sure they have the most up-to-date requirements for re-entering the U.S. Entry and exit requirements can change quickly.

All students traveling internationally are advised to get a COVID-19 booster shot before departure. Travelers should not expect to have access to boosters abroad, and many countries have or are expected to adjust their vaccine requirements to include a booster. See the CDC booster guidance and COVID Considerations for more information.

Passport processing times remain delayed.  If you are a US citizen interested in participating in education abroad in 2022, apply for your passport now. See UVA Programs for more details, and the State Department for details and to apply." - UVA International Studies Office
