Welcome to Fall 2022! The Center for Engineering Career Development team has been busy preparing a slate of career fairs, workshops, and events to help Engineering students explore career pathways, connect with employers and alumni, and access career-related internships, research and graduate school opportunities, and full-time jobs.Below are two of our early-fall career events that I encourage every Engineering student, from undergraduate through PhD, to attend:
Engineering Career Fair & Conference
Thursday, September 8
9am-5pm
Newcomb Hall
For the first time since 2019, the Center for Engineering Career Development will be hosting an in-person fall career fair for UVA Engineering and Computer Science students. This year, in addition to a traditional career fair, our event will feature a career conference where undergraduate and graduate students can connect with employers and attend workshops on a variety of career-related topics. Students can take advantage of the following offerings:
Career Expo: Meet representatives from over 75 employing organizations that are looking to hire Engineering students for internships and full-time jobs.
Career Pathways Sessions: Learn about careers in consulting, manufacturing, Engineering “for social good”, semiconductors, and computer app development.
Career Skills Workshops: Build interview skills, learn how to network for career success, and get the inside scoop on landing an internship.
DEI Events: Employers and UVA staff will host workshops on relevant career topics for first-generation college students, students with disabilities, and international students. There will also be an opportunity for students to network with employers in UVA's Multicultural Center and to meet students from our Engineering student affinity groups.
Wellness Lounge: Students and employers can recharge in our wellness lounge, which will feature a relaxed environment with healthy snacks and other stress-relieving treats.
Leading up to the Engineering Career Fair and Conference our team will host a series of events designed to help students prepare for the career fair, get their resume in order, and polish their networking skills. We welcome all students to attend these pre-conference sessions.
Virtual Engineering Career Fair
Wednesday, September 14
Handshake
With many companies changing how they recruit due to the pandemic, we are offering a virtual version of our career fair to employers who prefer to connect with students virtually. This is an excellent opportunity for all Engineering and Computer Science students to connect 1:1 with employers and to learn about careers at a variety of Engineering internships and jobs. Students must register for the career fair on Handshake and then sign up for 1:1 or group sessions.
Students should be on the lookout for many more opportunities to learn and connect with a wide variety of employers, alumni, and other professionals throughout the fall semester. Even if a student is not ready to look for a job or internship, these events are a great way to build professional confidence and to gain insight into Engineering careers. We will be sharing these activities with students through our weekly career E-newsletter and they can also find all our career-related events and schedule an appointment with a career advisor via their Handshake account: https://virginia.joinhandshake.com
