When students think of a career advising office, they often think about internships and jobs, resumes and cover letters, interviewing, and networking. Did you know that our team also advises students interested in exploring and applying to grad school?
Along with our colleagues, we recently hosted a series of events to help you learn more about graduate school, whether you're a 2nd Year wondering if grad school is for you or a 4th Year who's currently working on applications.
Read a recap of each event and watch recordings if you missed the live events. When you're ready to meet with a career advisor to talk about grad school, select the "Applying to grad school" appointment option within Handshake.Gateway to Graduate School
Every September we host an event to help you learn about the graduate admissions process and evaluate if grad school is a good fit for you.
This year Amy Clobes and Carla Davis, both from the Engineering Office of Graduate Programs, spoke about different grad school options, the application timeline, and how to develop an effective application. They also tackled how to fund grad school, highlighting numerous internal and external fellowships.
You can watch a recording of the presentation and access the slide deck here on our Collab site.
UVA CS Grad School Info Session
Thinking about a graduate degree in Computer Science? UVA CS professor Matt Dwyer spoke about the department's Master of Computer Science (MCS), Master of Science (MS), and PhD degree options.
Professor Dwyer not only explained the differences between Masters and PhD programs, but also spoke about the differences between the MCS and MS degrees. Students pursuing an MS will take coursework along with independent study courses, which will culminate in a written thesis. On the other hand, the MCS does not include a thesis. Instead, MCS students pursue a coursework-only or coursework-plus-project option.
Even if you're not considering UVA's CS graduate programs, I highly recommend watching Professor Dwyer's presentation to gain a better understanding of graduate student life. His advice applies to any student considering graduate school! Watch the recording.
UVA MS in Data Science Info Session
In this sessions, reps from UVA's School of Data Science spoke about the Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) program.
Things to know:
It's an 11-month rigorous program leading to a technical degree.
Graduates are ready to enter the field of Data Science.
UVA students can do a 3+1 or 4+1 version (GRE waived for UVA students).
The curriculum is experiential and provides students with practical and applied experience grounded in immense technical skill.

Graduate School Fairs
You're probably familiar with the job and internship fairs on Grounds. But did you know that every September UVA hosts a Graduate and Professional School Fair? At the fair, 100+ schools from across the world recruit UVA students for their graduate and professional programs. Participating in the fair is a great way to learn about unique programs, application deadlines, degree options, financial aid, and future career prospects.
This year reps from 206 programs participated in the fair, along with 720 students! Students met with admission teams and interacted with recruiters through video, audio, or chat.
If you missed this fair, or attended and want to participate in similar fairs, Idealist.org is hosting Grad School Fairs throughout the fall semester. Head to the Events section of Handshake and search for "Virtual Idealist Grad School Fair" to find fairs through October 20th.
