Externships are short-term job shadowing opportunities that allow you to gain insight into a career of interest. Most externships last one to three days, providing you with valuable exposure to a professional field without the longer committment of an internship.
At a company of interest you might shadow an employee, sit in on team meetings, meet various employees in the organization, go on an office tour, and/or participate in a hands-on activity.
How can I extern at UVA?
Each spring, our team partners with employers to offer a School of Engineering Spring Break Externship Program. Through this program, employers invite students to visit their organizations for one or more days during Spring Break.
Which employers have hosted student externs in the past?
Our team partners with different employers every spring break, but in the past, participating employers have included American Woodmark, Balfour Beatty, Canon Virginia, CarMax, Dominion Energy, Klockner Pentaplast, Micron Technology, Perrone Robotics, Shentel, Whiting Turner, WillowTree, Clark Construction, Leidos, Raytheon, and more.
How can I apply to an externship?
Employers are posting externships in Handshake in mid-to-late January. Search "externship-spring break 2020" to see all opportunities. Applications are due by Monday, February 3rd at 11:59pm.
By mid-February, we'll let you know if you've been selected for an externship! We'll meet with you before spring break for a mandatory orientation, and then you'll visit your employer host during a pre-arranged visit some time between March 9-13.
