Materials Science and Engineering Minor

The purpose of the MSE minor is to provide students a foundation for understanding how the processing, properties and structure of materials affects the science, design, and application of materials in the engineering discipline of their major field of study.

The information contained on this website is for informational purposes only.  The Undergraduate Record and Graduate Record represent the official repository for academic program requirements. These publications may be found here.

Requirements

For more information on the MSE minor, please contact our Undergraduate Coordinator.  Students who wish to pursue a minor in MSE should complete the necessary courses and fill out a Minor Declaration Form.

For course descriptions and official requirements of the MSE Minor, please see the Undergraduate Record.

MSE MINOR REQUIREMENTS:

Research

MSE is a research-intensive discipline. Undergraduate students are encouraged to become involved in research through i) an independent study research project, MSE 4960, ii) senior thesis projects, iii) and financially supported undergraduate research internships during the academic year or summer.

Materials Science is the perfect fit for me because it combines a variety of different disciplines, especially chemistry and physics, and has unlimited real-world applications.

Jerrold A. Floro

Associate Chair for Academics Professor

Jerrold Floro's research is to investigate and exploit nanoscale self-assembly and pattern formation in inorganic materials, to enhance properties and develop material functionality. Techniques include vapor phase thin film growth, laser processing, melting and rapid solidification, powder processing, and solid-state phase transformations.
