DMI interactions

Skyrmions nucleate from the competition between exchange energy, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in magnetic multilayer systems. Among these material properties, the DMI plays a critical role in the formation of skyrmions. The DMI is an antisymmetric exchange, mainly originating from strong spin-orbit coupling energy in systems with broken inversion symmetry. However, tuning DMI is essential to manipulate the properties of skyrmions such as size, stability. We use the Density Functional Theory (DFT) to tune the DMI and analyze the underlying mechanism behind it for both FM and FiM by interface engineering e.g. controlling the capping layer composition, capping layer materials. Currently, we are investigating compensated FiM GdCo alloy as a prototype material (to be published).
