But aside from getting a summer job or internship, many students wonder how they'll be able to fill up those long, warm summer days. While all companies treat their information sessions somewhat differently, you can always expect to leave one feeling more knowledgeable about a company or a particular role. Whether it's a formal presentation, a roundtable discussion, or a moderated Q&A, all information sessions offer a similar value to prospective hires. From January 5th through January 8th, the School of Data Science and the School of Engineering travelled with 17 UVA students to the San Francisco bay area to visit 8 companies and learn about careers related to data analytics and data science.The companies we visited included: Okta, Poshmark, Capital One, Internet Archive, Google, Bitly, Netflix and Intel and we heard about a wide range of opportunities for starting a career with a data focus.

Meet Garrett Beeghly, a 2017 Biomedical Engineering graduate who minored in Engineering Business. With a career fair and lots of great employer events coming up this semester, now is a great time to hone your elevator pitch. If an elevator pitch seems intimidating, it's helpful to think of it as less of a “pitch” and more of an introduction. It's a great tool to help you effectively foster connections at networking events and create new connections online. If you're stuck on what you should include in your pitch, here is an exercise to give you some ideas.I find it helpful to think about yourself, past, present and future when sharing information.

Externships are short-term job shadowing opportunities that allow you to gain insight into a career of interest. Most externships last one to three days, providing you with valuable exposure to a professional field without the longer committment of an internship.
