How the Program Works

Applications for admission to Virginia Engineering Online degree programs are made to the School of Engineering and Applied Science at UVA. The application process is on-going; new degree students are accepted each spring, summer, and fall term.

A VEO degree student can combine courses from UVA and supporting institutions to create a unique, individually appropriate, program of study. While there is no limit to the number of courses that can be taken as non-degree seeking student, if courses are not pre-approved by a degree advisor they may not be approved to count towards the intended degree. Prospective students register for classes or apply to the graduate program of their choice online, just as our on-grounds students do.

"I chose Virginia Engineering Online due to the convenience it provides for obtaining a professional master's degree coupled with the high flexibility I have in designing my curriculum to best address my needs as a working engineer."

Steve Glotzobher Steve Glotzobher ME Candidate VEO

Students may apply for entrace into a degree program, or take individual classes as a non-degree or visiting student.

Degree students may take up to half of their classes through one of our Cardinal Education partner institutions:

  • George Mason University
  • Old Dominion University
  • Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Virginia State University
  • Virginia Tech

Doing so offers even greater flexibility, and can shorten the time it takes to achieve the degree. Click to learn more about Cardinal Education.

The majority of the Virginia Engineering Online (VEO) courses are offered by way of recorded lecture sessions (asynchronous delivery), unless real-time live-stream attendance and/or participation is specified by the instructor. Online students have the same degree requirements and achieve the same ME degree as those who learn in person at our school. Students connect to class through the internet. Materials, resources, and homework assignments are exchanged over UVA email or UVA Collab.
