Frequently Asked Questions
Virginia Engineering Online (VEO) is your opportunity to grow professionally as an engineer or scientist. We have been electronically delivering accredited graduate engineering classes and degree programs from the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science to students throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia - and beyond- for over 35 years. If you have a computer and a reliable internet connection, you have full access to our courses and can work towards completing your degree! At VEO, we currently offer 6 master of engineering degrees in:
Chemical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Materials Science and Engineering
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Systems Engineering
The majority of the VEO courses are offered by way of recorded lecture sessions (asynchronous delivery) unless real-time live-stream attendance and/or participation is specified by the instructor. Online students have the same degree requirements and achieve the same ME degree as those who learn in person at our school. Online students connect to class through the internet from a home, work, or library computer. Materials, resources, and homework assignments are exchanged over UVA email and UVA Collab. All class sessions are recorded for later viewing and review purposes.
VEO ME students must complete 10 graduate courses to earn a UVA Masters of Engineering (ME) degree. The degree achieved is coursework only; no research thesis is required. To understand the particular course requirements for any one of the UVA degree programs, students should review the degree programs page and consult with the online advisor for that department. Before taking courses, students are strongly encouraged to discuss academic plans and intentions with an advisor to ensure that all courses one takes will count towards the degree.
Yes. Up to 15 transfer credits may be accepted into one’s VEO degree program. Transfer credit must be pre-approved by the degree-granting department. In general, Transfer credits must be completed at least one semester before graduation. See the Request Approval of Transfer Credits Form for further details.
Yes! In fact, we encourage students to take a class or two with us before applying. Early coursework can count towards one’s degree and may even bolster one's application package. Proven success in our classes as a non-degree/visiting student usually translates to continued success once one joins a degree program. See option 1 on our Getting Started page for more information.
Complete an application to one of our degree programs. To take classes as a non-degree or visiting student, do not complete an application; complete the online account request form here instead. Please know that these link to pages that look very similar to one another but are different.
GRE scores are an optional credential currently. As an applicant, you may decide if you want to submit your scores as part of your application. If you have already taken the GREs and count them as reflective of your abilities, feel free to submit them. If you choose not to submit test scores, you will not be viewed negatively. Applications are evaluated as a total package. Each application is evaluated for excellence and best fit via recommendation letters, research experience and interest, tenacity and curiosity, leadership abilities, and prior academic achievements.
