Research @ UVA Engineering
Engineering for a Sustainable FutureEngineering a better future will require the best work of researchers collaborating along the spectrum from the tiniest building blocks of materials through the complex workings of entire societal systems. We work at the micro- and nano-scale in fields like heat transfer, catalysis and 2-D materials to identify fundamental properties of matter. Our goal is not simply to conduct research, but to pursue research with positive global impact.
Research Area
Optics, Photonics and Sensing Energy, Transportation and the Environment Materials and NanotechnologyElizabeth Orrico
Elizabeth Orrico joined the Department of Computer Science as a lecturer in August 2020. Prior to her appointment at UVA Engineering, she spent two years as a physics and math teacher in Los Angeles as a Teach For America corpsmember.
Osman E. Ozbulut
Osman Ozbulut is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia.
Jesse Pappas
Jesse Pappas, Assistant Professor of Engineering and Society, is one of the only social psychologists in the U.S. with a full-time appointment in engineering. He works at the crossroads of individual experience and technological (e.g., educational) systems to cultivate human potential and keep technology where it belongs, working for us.
Rebecca Pompano
Joseph Poon
Joseph Poon's research group focuses on three projects: i) Study of thermoelectric properties of semiconductors and semimetals ii) Synthesis of thin films study of ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic heterostructures that show skyrmionic state and anomalous Hall effect. iii) Study of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with properties in composition space.
Upsorn Praphamontripong
Daniel Quinn
Associate Professor Quinn first came to the University of Virginia as an undergraduate student in 2006. For his doctoral work, Professor Quinn was awarded the American Physical Society’s Andreas Acrivos Dissertation Award in Fluid Dynamics. He went on to become a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Bio-Inspired Research and Design at Stanford University.
Adarsh Ramakrishnan
Michael Reed
Matthew A. Reidenbach
Ann Reimers
Dr. Ann Reimers retired as a full-time educator at UVa in May of 2023, but continues as a part-time academic advisor to Mechanical Engineering students. She is excited to be able to focus on supporting her advisees in their academic, emotional and professional growth.
Petra Reinke
Petra Reinke received her first degree, a diploma (M.S.) from the University of Konstanz in Germany, in Chemistry where she focused on physical chemistry.
UVA Engineering is a vibrant, collegial environment in which to work and teach.
