Research Assistant
July 2026 - Dr. Somayeh Asadi (CEE) is seeking an undergraduate or MS/ME research assistant to support a research project on using large language models (LLMs) and vision-language models for automated code compliance checking and cost estimation from construction floor plans.
The student will assist with three main tasks: dataset and ground-truth preparation, scenario generation, and prompt execution. Responsibilities include organizing floor-plan PDF files, recording drawing metadata, preparing measurement scenarios from architectural drawings, creating ground-truth measurements using PDF/CAD tools, running approved LLM prompts, saving model outputs, and logging results in structured spreadsheets.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and interested in artificial intelligence, construction drawings, and civil engineering. Familiarity with LLM tools is required, while experience with construction floor plans, AutoCAD, and Revit is helpful but not required.

Undergraduate Student Opportunities in Academic Research (USOAR)
USOAR is a program that targets rising first-, second- and transfer undergraduate students who do not have previous significant experience in research with a paid research position funded by the Federal Work Study program and the Office of Undergraduate Research. USOAR introduces students to the enriching experiences surrounding research and provides them with the chance to build strong relationships with faculty. It also seeks to attract students with financial need and from underrepresented populations and provide them with a path into research.
