Christopher L. Barrett, a professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been elected as a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Barrett is the UVA Biocomplexity Institute executive director and a Distinguished Professor in Biocomplexity. Under Barrett's leadership, the Biocomplexity Institute's team has been on the front lines of the national modeling, monitoring, planning and response to COVID-19.Barrett is a global leader in bringing computational science and the principles of interdisciplinary team science to the study and practice of systems at the junction of biological, cognitive, social and technological interaction. He has achieved a prestigious publication record and conceived, founded, and led large interdisciplinary complex systems research projects, ranging from global national security systems and infrastructure analytics to basic molecular bioinformatics, according to the UVA Biocomplexity Institute announcement.
The Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine was founded in 2013. Modeled after the National Academies, the Virginia Academy concentrates expertise of the most accomplished and innovative leaders in science, engineering and medicine to provide nonpartisan, objective guidance to decision-makers. Recognition from the Virginia Academy is another distinguished accolade for Barrett.
He is the recipient of the 20122013 Jubilee Professorship in Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University in Göteborg, Sweden and is a member of the 2010 Royal Colloquium for the King of Sweden. He was a Distinguished International Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm from 19971998. Barrett has also received distinguished research, service, advisory and security awards from the U.S. Navy, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Alliance for Transportation Research.
