Jonathan L. Goodall, professor in the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment, has been elected as a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Goodall leads the UVA Hydroinformatics group at UVA Engineering. Goodall's team collaborates with cities facing climate change-induced flooding challenges based on their research and exploration of advancements in computing and data science for solving challenging water resource management problems.Goodall recently presented on changing rainfall patterns to a joint commission of the Virginia General Assembly.
Goodall additionally serves as associate director of the Link Lab and leads research projects related to smart cities technology, one of the Link Lab's key research focus areas. He was also recently appointed to co-lead UVA's participation in the Public Interest Technology University Network, a consortium of 43 academic institutions focused on building the field of public interest technology and preparing the next generation of civic-minded technologists.
The Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine was founded in 2013 and hosts annual summits on issues of concern to every Virginian, from the future of transportation to preparedness for emerging disease. Modeled after the National Academies, the Virginia Academy concentrates expertise of the most accomplished and innovative leaders in science, engineering and medicine to provide nonpartisan, objective guidance to decision-makers. In 2020, Goodall was asked to co-chair a committee of the Virginia Academy created to “study the safety, quality of life and economic consequences of weather and climate-related events on coastal areas in Virginia.”
