Link Lab Faculty

Homa Alemzadeh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at UVA. She is also affiliated with the UVA Link Lab, a multi-disciplinary center for research and education in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Before joining UVA, she was a Research Staff Member at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center.

I am an eco-hydrologist with research spanning the continuum of natural through urban watersheds. A goal is to develop and incorporate principles learned in unmanaged ecosystems as part of urban ecosystem restoration.

Laura Barnes is a professor in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering. She is the Associate Director of Link Lab and directs the Sensing Systems for Health Lab which focuses on designing impactful, technology-enabled solutions for improving health and well-being.

Dr. Madhur Behl is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and an Amazon Scholar
He conducts research in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, and is the founder and team principal of UVA's Cavalier Autonomous Racing team.

Nicola Bezzo is an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Bolton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering at the University of Virginia.

Steven M. Bowers received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA, in 2007, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in millimeter- wave circuits and systems from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, in 2009 and 2014, respectively.

Benton H. Calhoun received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Computer Science from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, in 2000. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Brad is a faculty member in the Computer Science Department, the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, and the Link Lab. His group researchers and develops the next generation of low power, wireless, and secure Internet of Things systems to help make buildings and cities more sustainable.

Rohan Chandra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia. His research interests include multi-robot navigation, human-robot interaction, and autonomous driving. The overarching goal of his robotics lab is to design algorithms and systems that enable robots to navigate among humans, like humans.

Dr. Chang's research focuses on math-based and data-driven modeling and analysis of dynamic manufacturing systems, enhancing manufacturing efficiency and sustainability through adaptive control and machine learning, and advancing human-robot collaboration in industrial settings.

Dr. Chen joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia in August 2015.

W. Streit Cunningham is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His research integrates automation and high-throughput experimentation to accelerate the discovery of materials for extreme environments, including those encountered in nuclear and aerospace applications.

Prior to joining UVA as an Associate Professor in 2012, Dr. Dong was an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Wright State University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering from UCLA in 2003. After completing his doctorate, he spent three years as a post-doctoral researcher at the George Washington University.

Afsaneh Doryab's research is at the intersection of ubiquitous computing, AI, HCI, and health. She works on computational modeling of human behavior (incl. Activity Recognition) from data streams collected via mobile, wearable, and embedded sensors. 

Hongru Du's research integrates systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and public health to develop AI-driven and computational frameworks that support data-informed health decision-making. He focuses on modeling human–disease interactions and improving the resilience and efficiency of health systems.

Dr. Rider W. Foley is a professor in the science, technology & society program in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia. He is the principal investigator at University of Virginia on the ‘4C Project’ on Cultivating Cultures of Ethical STEM education.

My research interests span the fields of haptics, computational neuroscience, biomechanics, human–machine interaction, UX/UI, and human factors and ergonomics. We investigate cutaneous and proprioceptive cues that convey an object’s softness, and neural and biomechanical bases of social and emotional touch, and soft tissue manipulation or massage.

Jonathan Goodall is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the UVA Engineering Link Lab. He is a water resources engineer working to advance the field of hydroinformatics where data and computational sciences are used to improve the understanding, forecasting, and management of water systems.

Professor Harris is chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia. His research and teaching interests focus on large scale infrastructure systems with a primary focus on condition monitoring and system performance.

Arsalan Heydarian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the UVA Link Lab. His research broadly focuses on user-centered design, construction, and operation of intelligent infrastructure with the objective of enhancing their sustainability, adaptability, and resilience. 

Dr. Johnson has served on the faculty since 1984 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1994. He was a co-founder of Privaris, a biometrics security company, and served as Chief Executive Officer from 2002 to 2006 while on leave from the University of Virginia. 

Professor Lagor's current research interests focus on estimation and control for autonomous systems interacting with their fluid environments. He received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 2017, prior to which he worked for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company where he was a Certified Principal Engineer.

Dr. James H. Lambert's interests are systems engineering and risk analysis, with a focus on disruption and resilience of system orders, and applications in systems security and trust with embedded computing devices. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, IEEE, ASCE, and SRA and received the 2025 SRA Richard J. Burk Distinguished Service Award. 

Kyusang Lee is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering departments at University of Virginia. He received his B.S. degree from Korea University in 2005, M.S. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2009, and Ph.D. degree from University of Michigan in 2014, all in Electrical Engi

Felix Xiaozhu Lin joined the Department of Computer Science as an associate professor in August 2020. Prior to his appointment at UVA Engineering, Lin was a tenured associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University.

Prof. Eric Loth serves as the Rolls-Royce Commonwealth Professor of Engineering.  Loth’s current research focuses on extreme-scale wind turbines, energy-storage systems, multiphase flow, and aerospace propulsion. 

Henning Mortveit is an associate professor at the Department of Systems and Information Engineering. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2000. Before joining UVA, he was a technical staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and an associate professor at Virginia Tech.

His research develops data-driven decision models for disease prevention, cancer management, and healthcare logistics to improve patient outcomes and health system efficiency.

Osman Ozbulut is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia.

Brian Park is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Systems and Information Engineering at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on improving the efficiency of surface transportation systems via connected automated vehicle controls, traffic operations and management strategies.  

Associate Professor Quinn first came to the University of Virginia as an undergraduate student in 2006. After graduating, he left to get his PhD at Princeton University, then returned in 2017 to be on the UVA faculty.

Before joining UVA as an Associate Professor in 2016, Haiying Shen received her B.S. degree from Tongji University, China in 2000, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Wayne State University in 2004 and 2006. In addition to teaching, she is an Associate Editor for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (TON) and the IEEE Networking Letters (NL).

Cong Shen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UVa. He obtained his PhD degree from UCLA. His research interests are in AI/ML for wireless, reinforcement learning, in-context learning and transformers, LLMs, and federated learning.

Brian L. Smith, PE is a leader in advanced technology in surface transportation systems - specifically "connecting" the infrastructure to travelers to improve transportation safety and efficiency. His research has contributed to innovations such as mobile phone navigation systems and urban freeway management.

Mircea R. Stan is teaching and doing research in the areas of AI hardware, Processing in Memory, Cyber-Physical Systems, Computational RFID, Low Power, Spintronics, and Nanoelectronics.

Stankovic has h-index of 126 and over 72,000 citations. He was awarded the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal. He has two test of time paper awards, nine Best Paper awards, and eleven Best Paper runner up awards. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York, U.K. He is the Emeritus BP America Professor in the Computer Science dept.

Sun joined UVA as an associate professor in 2021. Prior to her position at UVA, Sun was an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University.

Amanda Watson’s research focuses on wearable technology for healthcare and athletic performance. Amanda Watson is an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Virginia. She is also affiliated with the UVA Link Lab, a multi-disciplinary center for research and education in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).

Dr. Zhao's research focuses on developing unconventional bioelectronics assisted by AI to advance precision health. His team designs intelligent sensors and robotics that revolutionize the way we diagnose, monitor, and treat various diseases.
